Louisiana: Calcasieu Parish Lifts All Curfews, Waste Management Resumes Regular Collection, and Numerous Food and Relief Sites Are Available for Residents

Local officials have announced that the modified curfew, from 8:00pm – 6:00am, has been lifted.  There are no curfews in place anymore for Calcasieu Parish.

Local officials have announced that all residents who evacuated to a state-run shelter for Hurricane Ike have returned.  In total, 1300 residents left Calcasieu Parish last Thursday, September 11, for shelters in Shreveport and Alexandria.

The busses carrying the evacuees began returning to Southwest Louisiana at 2:00 am, Monday morning, with the last bus arriving by mid-morning.  Members of the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury, City of Lake Charles, Calcasieu Medical Reserve Corps, National Guard, and Red Cross took part in the effort.   (more…)

Lousiana: Calcasieu Parish Opening Feeding Sites; Waste Management Resumes Garbage Collection Today

Local officials have announced that the 24-hour, parish-wide curfew has been lifted. A modified curfew, beginning at 8:00pm – 6:00am, has been issued for all residents.  This modified curfew will remain in place until further notice. No vehicular and pedestrian traffic should be on the roadways once the curfew begins, except essential emergency vehicles.

Waste Management will resume their regular garbage collection routes Monday September 15th.  In addition, for a two-day period, the parish will provide two manned drop-off sites for household solid waste only.  This is not for debris from the storm.  The sites are:

LAKE CHARLES , La. (September 14, 2008) – Local officials have announced that the 24-hour, parish-wide curfew has been lifted. A modified curfew, beginning at 8:00pm – 6:00am, has been issued for all residents.  This modified curfew will remain in place until further notice. No vehicular and pedestrian traffic should be on the roadways once the curfew begins, except essential emergency vehicles.

Louisiana: Updates from Calcasieu Parish- Temporary Shelter, Feeding Location, and Curfew Information Below

In an effort for officials to give more accurate information on damage assessments, the press briefing originally scheduled for today at 12:00 pm, has been canceled.

The 6:00 pm briefing will take place as scheduled, in the Police Jury chambers, located at 1015 Pithon St., in Lake Charles.

If any additional updates regarding important items such as the curfew occur prior to the 6 pm briefing, they will be issued in the form of a press release, and local officials will be available for interviews.

With the potential for heavy rainfall in the area today, parish officials are encouraging citizens to check ditches and drainage systems around their homes for debris that may have accumulated during Hurricane Ike.  Leaves, twigs and other trash may prevent rainwater from draining properly, making further flooding from today’s rain a possibility.

Louisiana: Calcasieu Parish Re-Entry Details

LAKE CHARLES (September 13, 2008) – The Parish-Wide curfew remains in effect at this time.  Wide-spread power outages have been reported in many areas of Southwest Louisiana, along with damage to homes and businesses from the effects related to Hurricane Ike.

For those residents who have evacuated, you may return to Calcasieu Parish.  If you choose to do so today or this evening, please be aware that some sections of major roadways are currently flooded and closed to traffic.  Please also be aware that community services are very limited at this time.  You should be able to support yourself for the next 3-5 days.

Although the curfew is currently in place, law enforcement authorities will allow residents to check on their loved ones, or take care of personal property as needed.  However, if you are out on roadways for non-essential purposes, you will be given a citation for violating the curfew.  The curfew will be more strictly enforced during the evening hours.  Foot traffic is strictly forbidden at night, and residents will be arrested.

Last Resort Shelters:

The City of Lake Charles has opened shelters of last resort at:

  • MKL Community Center, 2009 N. Simmons St., Lake Charles, 491-1497
  • Forest K. White Middle School, 1000 E. McNeese St., Lake Charles, 802-4000

In Sulphur, the 9th Grade School at 600 Willow St. has been opened as a temporary shelter.
Pryce/Miller shelter on Albert is no longer taking residents needing shelter
Residents going to a temporary shelter should bring medicine, bedding and any other personal items they may need.

Louisiana: Calcasieu Parish Opens Temporary Shelters of Last Resort

Temporary shelters of last resort have been opened in Sulphur and Lake Charles.

The City of Lake Charles has opened a shelter at the Pryce/Miller Recreation Center at 216 Albert Street.

In Sulphur, the 9th Grade School at 600 Willow Street will be opened as needed.

Evacuees going to the temporary shelter should bring medicine, bedding and any other personal items they may need.

Louisiana: Calcasieu Parish Evacuation Buses Have Stopped Running; Parish-Wide Curfew Currently in Effect

Evacuation buses have stopped running from the Lake Charles Civic Center.

The Parish-wide curfew is currently in effect until further notice.

The following evacuation advisories remain in effect for Calcasieu Parish:

Mandatory Evacuation:    For residents who reside in travel trailers, mobile homes, and low-lying areas due to the potential for high water,  storm surge, and wind.  The potential for flooding due to storm surge or high water in Calcasieu Parish is similar to that caused by Hurricane Rita. If your home or property was affected by that storm surge you can expect similar flooding damage.  This mandatory evacuation also includes special needs residents throughout the parish who are home-bound, requiring electricity for their well-being.
